Will of Charles Wade

Halifax County, Virginia, Will Book 9, Page 151 Abstract

The Will of Charles Wade was dated 17 April 1813 and proved on 23 May 1814 in Halifax County, naming as legatees, son Ron Wade, son John Jones Wade, son Hampton Baird Wade, daughter Margaret Downey and her son Robert Downey, daughter Sarah Wilson, daughter Mary Torian, and granddaughter Isabel Boyd, daughter of Jane Boyd. The will was witnessed by Nathaniel Torian, Royal (Henley?) and James Simmon.

 

Give to my son Robert Wade....to my son, John Jones Wade, 8 pounds Virginia money to be paid yearly. Six pounds of which Scare Torian is to pay during his lifetime, also my son, Hampton is to pay 2 pounds in part of the 8 pounds above mentioned every year. Son, Hampton Baird Waid all my tract of land I now live on lying on Dan River containing 211 acres... To my daughter, Margaret Downey's son, Robert Downey, one gold ring her having had part of my estate...to my daughter, Sarah Wilson, 3 negroes...to my daughter Mary Torian, three negroes, woman named....negro girl named Dinar and one named Silva to her heirs....my gr-daughter, Isabel Boyd one feather bed....Jane Boyd having had part of my estate.

To all whom these presents may come Greeting. Be it known that for various reasons, and thereto moving I do hereby manumit, liberate, and set free my four slaves to wit LETTE and her three sons THOMAS, CALEB and JAMES. THOMAS about thirty two or thirty three years of age of unmixed African blood, and CALEB also, who is about thirty years old. JAMES a halfblood about twenty years of age-the last three were Virginia born slaves. Now it is my intention that they the said LETTE THOMAS CALEB and JAMES be henceforth released and absolved from all involuntary servitude either to myself my heirs or to any other persons whomsoever, and that they be entitled to all rights and privileges that are or may be accorded to free persons of color by the State of Virginia or of any other State or territory where they may become resident. The testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this day and year just above writing.
