Obituary for Horace
Arthur Duke

gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, in
the Sternwheeler Rose for Horace Arthur Duke, who died Oct.
25 at age 88.
Horace Duke was born Dec. 27, 1918, in Portland. During
World War II, he served in the Navy. He was a police officer
for the Portland Police Bureau.

Portland Educator, Jeanne Hartzog dies at 63.
A celebration of life for the longtime
Teacher and Civic Leader, who succumbed to Cancer will take
place today.
Jeanne S. Hartzog, a longtime Portland
educator and active civic leader, died at home Aug. 27 of
cancer. She was 63.
A celebration of her life will be at 12:30
p.m. today in Bethel AME Church in Northeast Portland.
Mrs. Hartzog was an educator in San Diego for
10 years before arriving in Portland in 1972 with her
husband and becoming director of the School Communities
Program for the Urban League of Portland. She opened the
Sylvan Learning Center's first franchise in 1979, and owned
and operated the center in Northeast Portland until May.
Mrs. Hartzog was just as busy outside the
school doors, serving a long list of local organizations in
a number of positions. She was on the board of Camp Fire
Girls Inc. (now Camp Fire Boys and Girls), Ecumenical
Ministries of Oregon and the National Conference of
Christians and Jews.
Mrs. Hartzog was a trustee of Bethel AME
Church, and active in the Oregon Alliance of Black School
Educators and the National Alliance of Black School
Educators. She also was active in the NAACP.
Mrs. Hartzog was born Nov. 29, 1935, in
Denver. Her maiden name was Shorty. She received a
bachelor's degree in library science from the University of
Denver in 1957, then moved to San Diego, where she became a
teacher.
Mrs. Hartzog was the type of person who would
readily welcome and mentor newcomers, said her daughter.
"She became a real friend to them for life."
A private graveside service at River View
Cemetery will follow the celebration. The family suggests
remembrances to the Jeanne Hartzog Scholarship Fund, OABSE,
P.O. Box 6067, Portland, OR 97228.

Obituary for Carroll
Tolston
Oregonian, The (Portland, OR)
October 27, 1991
The funeral for Carroll Tolston of Northeast
Portland will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Caldwell's Colonial
Chapel. Burial will be in Rose City Cemetery.
Mr. Tolston died of heart failure Wednesday
in a Portland hospital. He was 71.
He was born July 10, 1920, at High Hill, Mo.,
and was in the merchant marines until 1976. He worked at
Riedel International from 1979 until his death.

Portland resident Earnestine (Willis) Banks
died Feb. 11. She was 67.
She was born March 6, 1932, in Pine Bluff,
Arkansas. She married in 1950.
She did missionary work with foster children,
troubled kids, seniors and women in Oregon’s correctional
institutions. She enjoyed cooking.
She was a member of Maranatha Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her son, Joe
Allen Banks.
Viewing will be 1-6 p.m. Feb. 17 at Cox & Cox
Funeral Chapel. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 18 at
Maranatha Church, 4222 NE 12th Avenue. The Rev.
John Parker will officiate. Burial will be at
Willamette National Cemetery.

Colored Woman Dies at 110 Years
Mrs. Margaret Johnson, said to be 110 years
old, will be buried to-morrow from her cottage in Bayside
where she had lived for the last eighty years. She was
colored, and according to her death certificate, she was
born in Cornelia Street, Manhattan, May 15, 1800. With her
husband she went to Long Island in 1830, and was known to
the old families in the vicinity of Bayside. She was the
mother of ten children, but is survived by only one
daughter. She was said to be the oldest person on Long
Island.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 23,
1995, in Bethel A.M.E. Church followed by a procession to
Willamette National Cemetery for interment.
Mr. Nunley died of heart disease June 18 at
age 72.
He was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Idabel, Okla.
A U.S. Army veteran, he retired in 1980 as a
millwright for Reynolds Aluminum.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Virginia
Carroll of Tacoma; stepsons, Charlie Leech of Tacoma and
Rudolph Leech of Portland; brother, Clifton of Oklahoma
City; sisters, Lois Jean Baccus of Oklahoma City, Shirley
Harper of Los Angeles and Linda Wright of Idabel; nine
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Remembrances: American Heart Association,
Oregon affiliate.
Arrangements: Killingsworth Little Chapel of
the Chimes.
